Start An Organization

Start an Organization

Help out your community by taking your favorite cause local!

For ideas on how to promote the issues you care about, visit these Web sites and get everyone you know involved!

Students Against

Destructive Decisions

http://www.saddonline.com/
formchapter.htm

If you want to help your peers avoid destructive behavior--like underage drinking, drug use, and violence--dedicate yourself to leading a chapter of SADD. The group's site offers instructions on how to form a chapter, how to register it with the larger organization, and how to get your friends and family to join.

Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention

http://www.edc.org/hec/ta/faq/coalition.html
Use the guidelines provided by the Higher Education Center to recruit a campus or community coalition, get them working together on initiatives, and form a strategy to help create an alcohol-free environment where you live.

Freevibe

http://www.freevibe.com/stepup/getinvolved.asp
Freevibe is mostly dedicated to anti-drug efforts, but you can join its peer helper program if you want to support the people around you with any problem you're interested in. You'll have to be certified by a trained educator before you can use your skills to listen to and help others. A toll free number listed on the Web site will put you in touch with the National Peer Helpers Association--you can call it to find out how to get certified and join a local helper group or start your own.

Promoting Diversity

The Survivor Project

http://thesurvivorproject.org/programs.html#essence_of_community
If you plan to form a local group to promote diversity, integrate into your efforts the method the Survivor Project uses. By seeking out those who are different from you and interviewing them, you can help promote tolerance. Read about the project, and then contact its administrators--they're happy to help you start a listening workshop in your community.
